Elbow pain is most commonly caused by overuse injuries.  Although arthritis is possible at the elbow, wear and tear is less common at this joint.  Common causes of elbow pain are tendinitis, tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis, golfer’s elbow or medial epicondylitis, and traumatic injuries such as elbow or arm fractures.  Some examples of repetitive motions that may cause lateral epicondylitis are turning a screwdriver manually, washing windows, or hitting a back hand in tennis.  Medial Epicondylitis may be caused by playing golf.  Pain is usually more intense in the evening following the activity.  Elbow range of motion may be full or limited and strength of the hand, wrist, forearm, and/or elbow may be affected.  Common initial treatments for elbow pain include ice, rest, medications and in rare occasions steroid injections, followed by flexibility and strength training.
